چکیده

Dear Editor, Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral disease caused by molluscipoxvirus. The first peak incidence occurs in preschool children. A second peak incidence occurs in young adults in which the condition is generally considered to be a sexually transmitted disease. Though the disease is self-limiting and the lesions are usually small, discrete, pearly and dome-shaped with central umbilication, atypical and rare varieties could be found in some patients, in which the lesions may be large, confluent or non-umbilicated.

Recalcitrant giant molluscum contagiosum in a patient with advanced HIV disease - eradication of disease with paclitaxel.

Molluscum contagiosum is a poxvirus skin infection that is self-limited and harmless, usually causing numerous single, umbilicated papules in immunocompetent people. However, a patient with immunodeficiency such as that associated with HIV disease may present with giant, widespread, and chronic lesions, for which no single intervention has been shown to be convincingly effective for curative tr...

Topical cidofovir: a novel treatment for recalcitrant molluscum contagiosum in children infected with human immunodeficiency virus 1.

Two children with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) presented to the dermatology clinic for treatment of disseminated molluscum contagiosum (MC). Both children suffered from severe social isolation because of their facial disfigurement. Their MC lesions were refractory to numerous therapeutic modalities, including liquid nitrogen, cantharidin, and 0.05 % tretinoin gel. Both children had MC...

Giant molluscum contagiosum: does it affect truly immunocompetent individuals?

Sir, Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a skin infection caused by a double-stranded DNA virus of the family Poxviridae manifesting clinically as asymptomatic single or multiple skin-coloured papules with umbilicated centres. It is a universally distributed and very common disease affecting mainly young children, sexually active adults and immunocompromised patients (1). In conditions with altered i...

Dermoscopic, Confocal Microscopic, and Histologic Characteristics of an Atypical Presentation of Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is a common and easily diagnosed skin condition; however, in immunosuppressed patients, presentations may be atypical requiring biopsy. The histopathology of molluscum is nearly unmistakable with the Henderson-Paterson bodies being pathognomonic for the condition. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a new, non-invasive technique which can be used to diagnose molluscum...

Disseminated atypical molluscum contagiosum as a presenting symptom of HIV infection

Atypical forms of molluscum contagiosum may be challenging to diagnose and are found in immunocompromised patients where they indicate severe impairment of cellular immunity. We report a case of disseminated atypical molluscum contagiosum which was the first sign of HIV infection and AIDS disease in a 38-year-old male patient. The lesions - painless, flesh-colored and violaceous papules and nod...
